PREPARATION FOR THEIR APPEARANCE IN YOUR SCHOOL

Program Description

Quintet Attacca presents Quintet Idol! Are you ready to vote for your favorite instrument in the wind quintet? After this presentation by Quintet Attacca, your students will be. Through memorable music of Rimsky-Korsakov, Scott Joplin, Miquel del Aguila, Eric Ewazen, and Arturo Marquez, the quintet will introduce all of the instruments of the quintet. The musicians will discuss the role of each instrument in the quintet, introducing musical terms along the way to help children gain an understanding of how the quintet works together as an ensemble. After the musicians have discussed how their instruments work, their job in the quintet, and why they should be the winner, they are featured in a work that highlights their instrument. Then the competition is on! Students will vote for their favorite instrument at the end, ultimately choosing the winner of Quintet Idol! Students throughout the Chicago Public Schools have found this program fun, exciting, and memorable.

* What instrument was your favorite to listen to? Why?
* Which instrument would you most like to play?
* Why do you think a horn is in a woodwind quintet?
* Chamber music requires teamwork, much like sports – which sport do you think is most like playing music? Why?
* Which piece was the most fun to listen to? Why did you like that piece?
* Quintet Attacca chose their name because they liked the meaning “attached” of the Italian word Attacca. They thought that best described their group. If you had a chamber music group with your friends, what would you call it and why? What are some other good names for chamber music groups?
* How could you tell that Quintet Attacca liked playing together? What did they do to communicate with each other while playing?
