Baroque Band, described by the Chicago Tribune as “a
stylish and exciting period instrument orchestra” debuted in Chicago
in May 2007. The following October the Band launched their inaugural season
presenting performances at Chicago’s Symphony Center, at The Music
Institute of Chicago (MIC) in Evanston, where they are also Ensemble-in-Residence,
and at The University of Chicago’s Rockefeller Memorial Chapel with
whom they are artistic partners. The Band’s first recording of Biber’s
Mensa Sonora for the Cedille label will be recorded in June 2008 and in
July they will make their debut at the Madison Early Music festival.
Garry Clarke, British violinist and conductor is one
of the finest of the new generation of interpreters of baroque music.
Clarke has performed, recorded, and broadcast with The Academy of Ancient
Music, The Sixteen, The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, The Kings
Consort, and The Hanover Band, working with musicians including Christopher
Hogwood, John Elliot Gardener, Harry Christophers, Andrew Manze, Sir Charles
Mackarras, and Rene Jacobs. Clarke was also a member of the European Baroque
Orchestra under the direction of Ton Koopman, and has performed, recorded,
and toured with William Christie and the French ensemble Les Arts Florissants.
Clarke moved to the United States in 2004.
Prior to moving to Chicago, Wendy Harton Benner was an
active performer in Washington, D.C.. Her solo appearances include performances
with the Columbia Orchestra (Maryland), Glenelg Chamber Orchestra, and
The Bach Sinfonia, for whom she has been concertmaster since 2003. Ms.
Benner performed as a member of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, including
a 2008-Grammy-Award-winning performance and has served as the violin instructor
and director of chamber music at Georgetown University and as the Baroque
strings coach at the University of Delaware. Ms. Benner holds a doctorate
in violin performance from the University of Maryland.
Craig Trompeter, baroque cellist and violist da gamba
performs and teaches throughout the United States. He appears in concert
and over the airwaves with Baroque Band, The Newberry Consort, Musica
Maris, Chicago Opera Theater, Music of the Baroque, Central City Opera,
Lyric Opera Chicago, and the Smithsonian Chamber Music Society. He has
recorded on the Harmonia Mundi, Cedille, and Centaur labels. In 2003 he
founded the Feldenkrais® Center of Chicago where he teaches Awareness
Through Movement® and Functional Integration®.
David Schrader, harpsichord, has appeared as a soloist
on organ and on harpsichord with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under
the direction of Sir Georg Solti, Daniel Barenboim, and Pierre Boulez
and with the Grant Park Symphony under Carlos Kalmar, as a soloist at
the Ravinia Festival under the direction of Nicholas McGegan, and with
many other orchestras throughout the United States and Canada. His recordings
include concerti of J. S. Bach with the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra, and
many releases of solo repertoire on the Cedille label. Mr. Schrader’s
active musical life includes performances with Music of the Baroque, the
Newberry Consort, and Bach Week in Evanston. In addition, he is on the
faculty of Roosevelt University, Chicago College of Performing Arts -
Music Conservatory; and for 20 years he has been the organist of the Church
of the Ascension.
